We hope you enjoy our conversation with Alischa Herrmann founder, business owner of Bespoke Press…
Tell us about your business. How did you start Bespoke Press, what do you love most about what you do. I started the business in 2007 after nearly a 10 year career working as a very established graphic designer. A churning for a more beautiful and less corporate life, I threw away my working career and decided to follow my heart. This saw a sea change to the sunny shores north of Brisbane, and we started the studio in our rambling old 1935 queenslander. It took a whole heap of enthusiasm, a lot of courage and plenty of sore and inky hands to learn the craftsmanship. I was terribly fortunate in that an old retired print master took me under his wing and offered me an informal apprenticeship.
I love everything about letterpress – the smell of reams of cotton paper, mixing ink and watching colours evolve, tinkering away on the presses, and producing timeless stationery that can be adored for years to come.
What is your favourite paper product right now Letterpress of course!!
What place in the world most inspires you and why? I really find our studio so very inspiring. It looks out over bird filled trees out to the ocean. We design and print to the distant sounds of waves crashing, birds chatting and the gentle hum of the presses printing away. I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else in the world right now!
If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why? I would love to live a day as a magazine stylist and to see what goes on behind the scenes, oh and maybe a visual merchandiser for Anthropologie, now that would be a dream job!
What is your favourite homemade gift to give? I love to bake – sweet packages of cupcakes and cookies, packaged in a sweet tin, wrapped in a piece of vintage fabric and a sweet little letterpress tag. Made with love through and through
